Not every dog is meant to be a show dog.
A show dog should be the best example of the breed standard as possible. You can go to www.IHCUS.org to learn more about the breed standard.
You may have the most beautiful dog, but does it have breed type, is it deer-like. Does it define the correct temperament of the breed? Does it enjoy being out in the crowds and public?
When looking at the standard, three things that need to stand out are, Breed-type, structure and movement.
Breed type includes such things as the essence of the breed (deer-like), size ranging from 23 1/2 inches to 27 1/2 inches, and of course those beautiful naturally standing ears. Size is so important because when does an Ibizan stop being a deer and becomes, an elk or even a moose? Were the pictures of the breed in the past elegant or big cluncky dogs?? Does a thick head or a rounder head give the appearance of a deer? Do ears at the top of the head, versus the base being at the eye give the correct picture?
Structure will lead to correct movement, so carefully go over your dog, with the standard. Make a list. There is NO PERFECT dog. As breeders we wouldn't exist. The key is to breed to the standard, not to the fad or flavor of the year. A sound and correct dog is the goal.
The movement of the breed is listed as such in the AKC standard:
Gait
An efficient, light and graceful single tracking movement. A suspended trot with joint flexion when viewed from the side. The Ibizan exhibits smooth reach in front with balanced rear drive, giving the appearance of skimming over the ground.
*** Now this doesn't mean the dog moves like an Afghan, Ibizan Hound movment if correct is like no other, not even their cousin the Pharoah Hound. They are not meant to be bouncy, or not to cover ground. Efficient gait is a point that is very important. Another very very important point is the joint flexion, without it the breed essence is lost!!!!****
