Growing up Ibizan Hound is not an experience for the faint hearted. An Ibizan puppy is like a very intelligent two year old hyperactive child. Although there are exceptions overall they are very active kids. If there is trouble to be found, ways to make you laugh and scream, they will do it.
They can find their own entertainment if none is available, although we may not agree with their choice. Their intelligence will astound you. Having taught and trained many breeds over the years, I have come to the conclusion, that they are one of the most intelligent breeds out there. Although their attention span is limited, and if they have it in their mind to, they will be the most stubburn mule you have ever met.
What it takes an average dog an hour to understand the Ibizan will learn in 10-15 minutes. You can quickly know when the class is over because the light is their eye will dull. At this point, you will swear they are looking for other entertainment. Small and rewarding training sessions are best. The breed overall lives to please you and hear your laugh and praise.
The use of crate training is a must. Between the use of the Weaning Box and the crate training most of my pups will not poop in the house from the age of 4-5 weeks on. They will try very hard not to pee, but usually that takes a little longer.
Providing chew toys is a must. I use everything from Cow hooves, pizzles, bone, rawhide, ect..... Monitor them the first few times, to make sure they go about it the right way. Always leave items that cannot be swallowed when unattended.
The Ibizan hound grows through, what I term, the miracle life change generally anytime near their first Birthday. This is where their brain all of a sudden says I am mature now. I have yet in all my years never had a dog not go through this phase, and this is what you look forward to. All of a sudden, you can honestly say NOW THIS IS A DOG!!! :-)
Overall the breed is a clown, that loves to be loved, and will do whatever they have to to reach this point in your life. So love them, the way you want to be loved and you will be rewarded with a friend like no other. A true soul mate of a dog.
